Robert made his first violin at age 13 with the assistance of his father, Robert Gordon, an amateur maker. His passion for knowledge grew through the years. In the early 1980’s he attended the Violin Society of America’s Workshop at Oberlin College, Ohio, an intensive month-long restoration workshop directed by master maker, Vahakn Nigogosian, of the Stradivarius Studios of New York City. Mr. Nigogosian turned the reigns over to a new director, Christopher Germain, who changed the focus from restoration to new making, inviting only top-notch makers from all over the world, many of whom instruct at the American violin-making schools. The workshop provides a unique forum for collaboration and sharing knowledge in a trade that is know for its secretive methods. Twenty years of Oberlin College violin making summer workshop experience, many as a staff member, has created a network of colleagues sharing knowledge and has given him a great background for his efforts at the bench.
Robert opened his Pleasantville, Pennsylvania studio in 1988 and moved his studio to Belsano, Pennsylvania in 1998. In 2006, he added a second location in Indiana, Pennsylvania. In 2011, he returned to work exclusively from his Belsano violin studio with a renewed passion for creating masterpieces made in the traditional hand-tooled method, patterned after the great makers, for the discerning player.
Robert is passionate about his work as a violin maker and he is committed to promoting his trade and the arts in general in the community that he serves. He is an avid supporter of live music and hosts a traditional acoustic music circle each month as well as promoting additional events throughout the year.
